A Disappointing Defeat For Belchertown High School Wrestlers

By Michael Seward, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

It was a match that would determine the league championship according to the Belchertown High School Wrestling Coach Darren Burkey. Although it was a close match, Southwick won 39-36.

“Southwick has always been our archrival…Southwick has always been the one team during the course of the season that we want to try and beat…they’ve always been tops in our leagues,” said Burkey.

Southwick won the first two matches against Zach O’Donnell and Addison Ray of the 103 lb. and 112 lb. weight classes. Then Belchertown responded with a couple of victories with Andrew Huyhn and Jake Cote in the 125 lb. and 130 lb. weight class respectively.

A couple of Southwick forfeits in the 135 lb. and 140 lb. weight classes kept Jard Lauziere and Dan Leary from the mat.

After a bit of a battle in the 145 lb. weight class, Belchertown’s Mike Schmidt found himself in a less-than-desirable position that resulted in him being pinned by Southwick’s Anthony Spirito. This was followed by win for Belchertown in the 152 lb. weight class when Dustin Gregoire pinned Zack Madera.

Steve Popowich and Evan Quinn, who was distracted by a bloody lip, were unable to defeat their opponents in the 160 lb. and 171 lb. weight classes. Matt Truehart walked away with a victory against Southwick’s Gabe Kraus in the 189 lb. weight class. But then Southwick responded when Ryan Sealy pinned Andrew Whitehead after 3:14 in the 215 lb. weight class.

Even though the final match between Belchertown’s Mike Dull and Southwick’s Joel Cruz resulted in a decisive victory, it was not enough to overtake the team in green.

Coach Burkey thought the team could have performed better. “We made mistakes that I was hoping we wouldn’t make…hanging our heads and getting ourselves headlocked and thrown,” he said.
