Streetlights A Solution If Residents Are Willing To Pay

Selectmen took some time at their last meeting to discuss a request from David Pula for a streetlight on Underwood Street.
Selectman Ronald Aponte reported to the board that Department of Public Works Director Steven Williams stated that additional budget cuts may lead to less streetlights being lit.
“So it seems to be a bit premature to add a new streetlight…when there’s a reasonable chance that we won’t be able to turn it on,” said Aponte.
A number of different solutions were offered by the board for those who want a streetlight despite the fact that the town can’t afford it. Selectman Alfred Roccanti inquired if it was possible for residents to pay for the costs of a streetlight.
“I guess my concern is how many would we end up with,“ said Board of Selectmen Chairman James Barry.
Barry also stated that homeowners could purchase lights to illuminate the streets themselves. Aponte stated that as a public safety issue, streetlights should be town burden. He also said that the one of the characteristics of Belchertown that many find appealing is the lack of streetlights. Selectman Michael Reardon offered that residents could attempt to contract with National Grid independently.
Aponte warned that neighbors should work cooperatively when deciding whether or not to install a streetlight due to the potential for conflict.
The Board of Selectmen took no action on the matter, but will consider it when preparing the FY 2011 budget.
