Save the Date for the Anniversary Ball The 250th Anniversary Committee is busy preparing for the next big event, which is the Anniversary Ball on Saturday, April 2 at 6:00 p.m. The gymnasium at Belchertown High School will be elegantly transformed for this gala event and guests are encouraged to dress semi-formally or in historical garb. Enjoy a choice of three main dishes (catered by our VFW) and dance the night away (to a DJ and live music) as we celebrate Belchertown’s history in style! Tickets are $50.00 each and will be available for purchase very soon. For more information, please contact the event co-chairs Linda Sterling (323-9312), Shirley Salvatore (323-9509), or Peg Louraine (253-3124).

Celebrating 250 Years with Quilts

You’ll never see the Town Hall auditorium look so colorful as it will on Saturday, July 2, 2011 from 10 AM to 5 PM, the day of the Anniversary Picnic. Quilts will be hanging everywhere! Mark that date on your calendar right now. Admission will be free.

The show committee is looking for quilts, of any size (doll quilt to king size) or age that have been made by former or current Belchertown residents. Better yet, if you have a quilt with pertinent Belchertown history, we’d all love to hear the story. Check your garage, attic, closet and cedar chest. All entries will receive a commemorative participant ribbon. This show will not be judged; however, a Viewer’s Choice ribbon will be awarded as voted on by show attendees.

To enter the quilt show, please contact Jane Crutchfield (283-4456, ahc60@hotmail.com) or Linda Sterling (323-9312, fatquartergal@charter.net). An entry fee of $5.00 per quilt to defray show costs is suggested. (There will be an entry form available at www.belchertown250.blogspot.com) Number of entries per person may be limited due to space restrictions. Don’t be shy, now is the time for ALL Belchertown quilt owners and especially quilt makers to participate – we know you’re out there!

Don’t Wait Another 50 Years to Join the Bushy Brothers Remember--for the first time in 50 years, the Bushy Brothers are inviting new members. Have you thought about joining the fun? This is an elite bunch of trendsetters!
Station 5 Salon is hosting and sponsoring the Bushy Brothers Contest. It’s easy and fun to join! Registration starts February 22 at Station 5 Salon (5 Jabish Street). Show up clean-shaven during business hours: Tues-Thursday 10-8, Fri 9-5, or Sat 9-2. Complete a short registration card and have your picture taken to document your baby smooth skin. These will be on display throughout the “growing season”. Registrations will be accepted until May 1. Yes, that is a long registration time, but everyone grows facial hair at a different rate and some may not feel they need the maximum amount of time.
Judging will be done at the Celebration Picnic on the town common on July 2. There will be several categories to be judged including full beard, curliest, most colorful, mutton chops/side burns, longest mustache, goatee, and most unique. In a slightly different twist, there are some gentlemen who have existing beards who are reluctant to shave them for this contest. So a new category will be added--the Bushiest Brother of them all! Sign up for this category is still required during registration, but it is not required that you be clean-shaven at the start.

250th Souvenirs to Support the Celebration

Collect a piece of Belchertown’s history and support the 250th Anniversary with the purchase of a commemorative pocket watch, wrist watch, antique coin, umbrella, or lapel pin! These souvenirs were created especially for Belchertown’s 250th Anniversary and will make a wonderful keepsake or gift. What better way to symbolize the passage of time than a decorative watch? Also available is the book “Mysteries of Belchertown’s History” by historian Cliff McCarthy. Watch for upcoming book-signings! To purchase any of these items, please contact the Town Clerk’s Office at 323-0281. You may also go to www.belchertown250.blogspot.com for more information. Your support is very much appreciated.

Watch for 250th Anniversary updates each week!
